Why Hosting may be your best Option for Vision 6
Vision 6 is built on a different technology platform from all previous versions of Vision. If you are considering utilizing Vision 6 be sure to take a close look at the time and resource investment that it will take to accommodate this new platform. Many organizations are finding that for them, a hosted solution is the better option.
What needs to be done from client side to utilize Vision 6?
All client workstations must have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed on them in order to access Vision 6.
What needs to be done on the server side?
Vision no longer supports Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or Windows 2000 Server, so you must upgrade to MS SQL 2005 or 2008 and Windows Server 2003 or 2008.
Deltek Vision 6 uses Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services as the new Report Management and delivery platform. With this change, there are several things to consider when you are planning migrating to Vision 6.1.
- SQL Server Reporting Services is not installed as part of the Deltek Vision installation (as Actuate was). Therefore, setup requires that SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services be already installed and configured in order to connect to the Report Server.
- With previous versions of Vision that relied on the Actuate reporting platform, Deltek licensed Actuate through an OEM agreement and distributed the product with all versions of Deltek Vision. In addition, the agreement with Actuate allowed companies to scale Actuate onto multiple reporting servers without the need to acquire additional Actuate licenses from Deltek or Actuate. With the Actuate licensing model, Deltek incurred the cost of Actuate so the clients did not see a direct cost impact from an Actuate licensing perspective.
- By contrast, Microsoft SQL Reporting Services is licensed as part of the Microsoft SQL Server product line. Because Deltek Vision 6 requires MS SQL Server for the product’s transactional database, all clients will need some form of MS SQL Server licenses to support the Vision 6 product. However, depending on the version MS SQL Server the client owns and the number of reporting servers a client may use, there may be additional SQL Server licenses required to support Vision 6.
